Why the Cajon? Let Me Explain!

Hey everyone! You might have noticed I’ve been sharing a lot of Cajon covers on my YouTube channel lately and wondered, “What’s up with that?” Well, here’s the story:

In many clubs and bars here in Berlin (and probably across the globe), traditional drum kits are being banned for one simple reason—they’re deemed “too loud.” Now, as drummers, we know that with proper technique, we can adjust our volume and perfectly "play the room." But let’s face it—it’s not always that simple.

So, what’s the solution? Enter the Cajon!

This little box of magic is compact, versatile, and when played with the right technique, it can sound remarkably close to a full drum kit. Yet, I often hear people say, “The Cajon just doesn’t sound right for certain styles of music.”

To that, I say: Challenge accepted!

That’s why I’ve been creating these Cajon cover songs. I want to show how incredible and dynamic this instrument can be, no matter the genre. You can check out my latest covers (and more) on my YouTube channelhttps://www.youtube.com/@MarcelvanCleef

Drumming in Schools

Drumming in school with professional guidance is an event that connects students, teachers, and educators alike. It fosters teamwork, imparts musical knowledge, and, most importantly, is a lot of fun!

Experience the Cajon/Percussion Day!

The Cajon Day is a workshop format specifically designed for schools, perfect for project weeks or as part of a focused learning initiative. It can be conducted with class levels ranging from 2nd to 12th grade and accommodates group sizes of 10 to 50 participants.

The Cajon is the primary instrument used in the workshop, but other percussion instruments available in the school are warmly welcomed.

The focus of the lessons, which vary by age group, is on the joy of playing and the shared musical experience as a group. During the 45-minute sessions, participants not only learn practical skills but also work on one or more percussion pieces, which are often performed at the end of the day.

All learning materials, including sheet music and practice videos, are provided free of charge and can be used for documentation, preparation, or follow-up practice.

If your school doesn’t have enough instruments, we’re happy to provide up to 30 Cajons on loan at no cost. Additional instruments can also be rented for a small fee. Please let us know in advance if you need assistance!

The Cajon/Percussion Day is offered in two formats:

  1. Standard Format: Ends around 1:00 PM and generally covers regular school hours.
  2. Long Format: Ends around 4:00 PM and includes an additional session after lunch, which can be used for a short training session for teachers and educators on how to use the Cajon.

If you have specific ideas for your school event, feel free to share them with us when making your inquiry!
